Community Response Saves Life at Osoyoos Home Hardware

A quick response from an off-duty firefighter and CPR-trained employees saved Matthew Card's life on September 21, 2024, when he suffered sudden cardiac arrest early during a haircut appointment. The incident highlighted the importance of having a public access defibrillator (AED) and comprehensive first aid training in place.

On September 21, 2024, Matthew Card, an early customer at Osoyoos Home Hardware, experienced sudden cardiac arrest. Josh Tomlin, a firefighter off-duty, administered CPR and used the AED provided by BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) to revive Card.

The quick response from Tomlin and other employees who had received comprehensive training in first aid and CPR led to Card's recovery. Todd Kunz, the store manager, had previously trained all staff on these essential life-saving techniques.
