Osoyoos Considers Water Conservation to Save Millions with Development

Osoyoos council has approved a water conservation plan that includes residential infill development and new domestic water meters, aiming to reduce average daily demand by 50% through efficiency measures.

In response to the need for cost-saving measures and sustainable development, Osoyoos council has approved a comprehensive water conservation plan. This plan incorporates residential infill development projects designed to increase housing density while reducing overall water consumption.

The initiative also includes the installation of new domestic water meters to monitor usage more accurately. By implementing these measures, the town aims to decrease its average daily demand (ADD) from 1,300 liters per capita daily (lpcd) to 600 lpcd by 2052. This reduction is expected to result in significant savings of $51 million through reduced water treatment plant costs.

However, the plan faces a challenge due to staffing limitations, which could make enforcing new conservation bylaws difficult. Despite these hurdles, Osoyoos remains committed to its goal of enhancing water efficiency and ensuring sustainable development for future generations.
