Oliver Town Seeks Provincial Support for Canal Upgrade Amidst Economic Uncertainty

The town of Oliver, grappling with a significant debt burden and economic challenges, is now seeking provincial funding to upgrade its aging irrigation canal system, which remains crucial to the local agricultural economy.

Despite facing substantial financial constraints and a debt load of $7 million, with approximately 89% tied to the canal system, Oliver Mayor Martin Johansen has emphasized the town's urgent need for provincial funding. The irrigation canal, which generates an annual crop value of $190 million, is currently in dire need of upgrades due to recent rockfalls and freeze-thaw damage estimated at over $200 million.

Minister Lana Popham recently toured the canal by helicopter in Victoria, highlighting its importance for agricultural productivity. Christine Boyle, Agricultural Minister, commended Oliver's efforts during her visit and indicated that around $40 million is available for similar projects within British Columbia. The town of Oliver has also proposed a range of upgrades including a structural integrity assessment, an economic impact study, and funding for the Rock Cliff Pump Station upgrade.

Oliver Mayor Martin Johansen stated, 'We are at a critical juncture where we need to secure additional support from the province to ensure the canal's continued operation. Our agricultural sector is integral to our economy, and without this investment, we risk jeopardizing our future viability.'
