Oliver Starfish Program Faces Funding Crisis Amid Growing Demand
The Oliver Starfish Program, established in 2019 to provide groceries for kids over weekends, is now facing significant financial challenges as demand has surged and donations have dwindled.
In its fourth year of operation, the program has seen a substantial increase in need and is now struggling to meet weekly costs. In fiscal year 2025/26, it served 45 children with groceries each week, totaling $40,000 annually.
Despite this financial strain, the program remains committed to its mission of supporting local youth. However, without additional funding, it faces a critical situation for the upcoming school year. The Town of Oliver has been approached for support and is encouraging residents to contribute by sending cheques marked 'Oliver Starfish' to their designated address.
