LSIB Warns of Drought-Fueled Campfire Risk in BC's Cawston Area

The Lower Similkameen Indian Band (LSIB) has issued a warning to campers after an unattended campfire near the town of Cawston, BC sparked concern amid severe drought conditions.

Following a report of an unextinguished campfire left burning overnight near the town of Cawston, BC, Lower Similkameen Indian Band (LSIB) Emergency Management received notification at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

The LSIB promptly extinguished the fire by around 3:35 p.m., ensuring it was fully contained to mitigate potential risks posed by dry ground and serious drought conditions in the region.

Despite recent cooler weather, the area remains in a severe drought state, with dry grasslands and range lands posing significant ignition threats. LSIB has emphasized the importance of completely extinguishing all campfires before leaving them unattended.
