Low Sockeye Salmon Numbers Expected in Okanagan
Okanagan waters expect low adult sc³win (sockeye salmon) for second consecutive year.
According to the Times Chronicle, Okanagan waters are expecting low adult sc³win (sockeye salmon) for the second consecutive year. The high temperatures and low water levels in the region are contributing to this decline.
The Okanagan Nation Alliance has declared an emergency across six watersheds due to droughts and declining fish populations. Climate change is also a major contributor to the earlier snowmelt, warmer temperatures, and more frequent drought conditions in the region.
The expected number of sockeye salmon in the Okanagan River system ranges from 4,800 to 14,500. However, no economic or recreational fishery will be planned due to the low numbers.
