Indian Band Employee Sues for Wrongful Termination

A former financial controller of the Osoyoos Indian Band has filed a lawsuit alleging wrongful dismissal, seeking damages and aggravated compensation.

Joyce Lavallee, a 69-year-old former financial controller for the Osoyoos Indian Band, has initiated legal proceedings against her former employer. The lawsuit claims that she was dismissed without proper notice and with reduced compensation, leading to a wrongful dismissal scenario.

The case, filed in October 2025, is currently pending in the BC Supreme Court. Lavallee seeks damages for wrongful dismissal, aggravated damages, and costs. Despite not receiving a response from the Osoyoos Indian Band regarding the lawsuit, Lavallee's claims continue to be heard by the court.

The incident occurred in May 2025 when Lavallee was terminated from her position with the band. Her legal action underscores ongoing concerns about employment practices within indigenous communities and highlights the importance of fair treatment for employees.
