Okanagan Falls Incorporation Proceeds with Election Planning

Residents of Okanagan Falls will soon cast their votes for local leaders, marking an important step in the community's transition to a municipality.

With incorporation on November 1st in the offing, Okanagan Falls residents will soon participate in a pivotal democratic process by electing their local leaders. The community, which currently has under 2,300 inhabitants, is gearing up for an October vote to choose both a mayor and four councillors.

As part of this transition, government entities have committed significant resources towards the election and administrative aspects, with total funding totaling approximately $6.6 million. This investment includes $1.8 million provided by the provincial government specifically for these purposes.

The process is also intertwined with the involvement of the Osoyoos Indian Band, who are part of the community's land claims history dating back to before Confederation in Canada. The province has proposed a dual name combining both English and Indigenous elements as part of this transition, reflecting its commitment to inclusivity and heritage preservation.

Support for this initiative comes from Christine Boyle, Minister of Municipal Affairs, who underscores her support for the community's move towards municipal status.
