Joseph M. McArthur-Pereira, who was found not criminally responsible due to mental illness for setting fire to the Osoyoos RCMP detachment in 2019, has been granted an extension to appeal that decision. He argues that he has spent more time in psychiatric care than he would have in jail, and that there were procedural deficiencies in his original hearing. A B.C. Court of Appeal justice agreed to the extension, pointing to new psychiatric reports that do not support the original ruling.
