Jane Stelkia, a beloved 96-year-old elder of the Osoyoos Indian Band, has served as a co-author on a global horse migration study published by the University of Ottawa. The research integrates paleogenomics and isotope data with traditional Indigenous knowledge to understand how climate change shaped historical horse mobility. Stelkia shared valuable insights on the sacred connection between the Okanagan Nation and the “Horse Nation” (Snklc’askaxa) along the historic Medicine Man Trail.
